Who I am/Whom I be

I am a scholar, eyes wide open and hands ready to try. I am an explorer, a resident, and observer of mixed cultures. Because I lived in a foreign country for a third of my childhood, I grew up consciously impacted by language. In a family where anything and everything could be cause for discussion/debate, I grew more and more aware of the consequences of ideas. I have always questioned. My mind tends towards the meta (more than may be healthy) and my hunger for clarified reality has only ever grown. I am a philosopher.

I am a writer because I am made in the image of the author of all things. I can work to uncover reality with my words only because I have the breath of Him who created reality with his words. I have hope to write, because I have great confidence that the world is fundamentally meaningful and magical. Meaningful because the universe and man’s place in it is a gift from God. Magical because Yahweh sustains the world by His power and we spend our lives learning more and more how His world moves. No fiction is more fantastic than fact.

Lastly, the person Corban is certainly much more than his ideas and linguistic artifices, however you will know him only in this way. My hope is to help you set your expectations well if you are interested in following my writing adventure. For example, I invite you to reflect on this section’s heading. Entertain the poetic/philosophical musing for as long as your patience and interest lasts. In the same way, I present all my work to you as a thoughtful and careful creation. Know that I labor over my writing to articulate meaning, hoping that every word would bless the reader. However, I realize I am a maturing artist, prone to verbosity, still self-absorbed, and in need of critique. Explore my writing at your leisure, and enjoy whatever truth, goodness, or beauty that you find within.

Why a Substack?

It is difficult to write. As you work towards definition and articulation, you are brought to the painful edge of your ability and understanding. It is a joy to write. When you reach epiphany and can share clarity, the toil produces much fruit. I have written more or less willingly throughout most of my life, though always for school or by external request. This substack is my commitment to meet self-imposed deadlines for my art and push myself out of my writing comfort zone. It is also an exciting platform to publish my written work, receive feedback, and display my developing ability. I will use each week to explore a new type of writing to stretch and challenge my ability and experience. Expect something new each week as I face the chaos and turmoil of uncovering and portraying truth and beauty.

Thank you for your interest and time!

Many thanks to my friend Houston Coley for the beautiful photos
